Artist Statement

Born and raised in China (1998), I am a contemporary artist currently residing in London. My work explores themes of gender fluidity, inspired by my reflections on family dynamics and social roles in modern society. Using traditional Chinese lacquer—a cultural material with an 8,000-year history—I challenge the concept of gender as a fixed biological binary and present it instead as a fluid, socially constructed idea.
In my work, I combine clothing with lacquer, an Asian organic material derived from the Toxicodendron vernicifluum tree. Initially applied as a liquid, lacquer hardens into a protective layer capable of preserving objects for millennia. This transformation from fluid to fixed serves as a powerful metaphor, turning soft fabrics into rigid sculptures. Through this combination of lacquer and clothing, my series intentionally blurs gender characteristics, symbolising society’s role in constructing gender identities while also offering individuals a sense of gender-neutral safety and inclusion.
